Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) and Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) are specialized, gentle massage techniques designed to stimulate the body’s lymphatic system. The process focuses on accelerating the movement of lymph fluid to help reduce inflammation, reduce fluid retention, and internally cleanse the body. Preparation requirements are listed lower on this page.
The physical application of LDT is highly specialized and differs significantly from a traditional massage:
1. An Exceptionally Light Touch: The tiniest lymph vessels are about the thickness of a hair strand. They are targeted by this light, short, wave-like stroke-n-pause repetition. Lotions or oils are generally omitted. These strokes are precisely directed toward the nearest functional lymph nodes, opening up blockages and encouraging the fluid to move through its natural transport system.
2. Deep Relaxation: Because the pressure is so light and rhythmic, the process deeply calms your nerves. Many clients drift into a deep sleep.
3. Drainage or Elimination: The physical evidence of a successful lymph cleanse is experienced after the session through increased urinary volume and bathroom elimination.
4. Localized Relief: For localized sessions, such as a sinus or rhinitis treatment, clients may experience a brief period of post-nasal drip for up to 48 hours as the nasal and facial passages clear out.
Post-Operative & Condition-Specific Adaptations
The fluid is moved painlessly toward lymph nodes, never toward incisions. When used for surgical recovery, both elective and required surgeries, the healing process and recovery time are remarkably shorter in post-op improvement. *Please arrive with all incisions sanitarily covered.
Tissue Softening: In post-op recovery, fluid can pool and form hard lumps or internal adhesions. Early intervention (often within the first week, unless complications exist) allows LDT to gently soften these hard areas, smooth out the tissue, and accelerate healing.

Conditions that benefit from LDT:
- Chronic Pain & Fatigue: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arthritis, and Stress.
- Respiratory & Sinus Issues: Sinus stuffy rhinitis, allergies, infections, sinus pressure, post-nasal drip, and COPD.
- Neurological & Head Injuries: Concussions, former falls with a hard head hit, Whiplash, Headaches, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Stroke recovery.
- General Healing & Injuries: Sprains, meniscus problems, swollen ankles, eye floaters, and cleansing debris from the brain or body.

Post-Operative Recovery
LDT drastically shortens recovery times and improves post-op tissue health for:
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
- Liposuction
- Cosmetic elective surgeries
- Most required or elective surgeries LDT cleanse before surgery reduces risk of infection. LDT after surgery cleanses inflammatory debris , reducing pain for healing.
How to Prepare for Your Session
To maximize your cleansing massage and avoid reactions like headaches or nausea, please follow these preparation guidelines starting 24 to 48 hours before your appointment:
- Hydrate Well: Drink 8–10 glasses of water (8 oz each) the day before, the day of, and the morning after your treatment.
- Watch Your Diet: Avoid red meat, sugar, and fried foods.
- Cut Caffeine: Minimize caffeine to almost none the night before, the day of, and the morning after your session.
- Timing: Always finish eating at least 90 minutes before your scheduled massage therapy.
There was a very noticeable improvement in my eyes following the Lymph Care massage for my sinus area. After my first session, eye floaters and other symptoms decreased a lot. I didn’t know this technique could help my eye condition tremendously in two sessions. It calmed my whole body’s reaction to stress. Wow! – Linda R. Apopka, FL Aug. 2013
Tips to Keep Your Lymph System Flowing Freely
- Drink plenty of water: A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces daily (e.g., if you weigh 200 lbs, aim for 100 oz of water).
- Wear loose undergarments: Tight elastic cuts off lymph flow. Ensure your undergarments fit comfortably.
- Ditch the underwire: Underwire bras can clog lymph flow, occasionally causing congestion below the breasts that appears as cellulite or fatty tissue.
